DHS (Deployable Hood System), is a pedestrian safety feature that reduces the risk of serious injury for pedestrians when involved in a frontal collision. Sensors in the front bumper react in milliseconds when a collision occurs with a pedestrian, deploying the hydraulic actuators under the bonnet to increase the space between the bonnet and the engine. By increasing this critical distance the pedestrian impact will be far less severe. Operating at speeds above 12.4mph, the speed above which pedestrians are most likely to be seriously injured in head on collisions, the system is designed to minimise injury.
