If the engine of a car with an alternator is running and the battery is disconnected, the engine will continue to run. If all you have is a single circuit marine battery switch and a track worker runs over to your car after you flipped it and turns off the switch, the engine will continue to run. An FIA certified switch has three circuits and six poles. Turning the switch off will disconnect the battery, the alternator, and the ignition, ensuring that the engine will stop.
